Alex Wheatle

In June 2022, Stories Of Care will publish Tales of the Bold, The Brave and The Beautiful, a new anthology for children, with Manchester Metropolitan University (Mcr Met).

The anthology is the culmination of our 18-month Children’s Writing & Professional Development Programme, working closely with twelve aspiring writers from low income, non-traditional families and care-experienced backgrounds to develop their first published short stories for children. Together they have created a groundbreaking collection of funny, heartfelt and fantastical stories, inspired by their experiences with an uplifting message that everyone is worthy of family and love.

Lead Artist on the project, Oliver Sykes and writers, Reece Williams, Dominic Berry, Sophie Willan and Danielle Jawando, author of the highly acclaimed, And the Stars Were Burning Brightly, have also contributed stories. The Anthology will be published by Manchester Metropolitan University and 2000 free copies will be gifted to children from care experienced, low income and non-traditional families.

Stories of Care Founder and Executive Director, Sophie Willan, said,

“Setting up Stories Of Care is part of a life-long commitment to ensure that we ‘not normals’ get to own our stories; write them, produce them, star in them and work with each other to create them. I’m incredibly proud of the community of collaborators this project has developed. They have brought so much of themselves and their wonderful imaginations to this project. I have fallen in love, not just with the worlds and the characters within this book, but the writers and community behind them.”

Tales of the Bold, the Brave and the Beautiful is the second anthology to be published by Stories of Care and the first under new Lead Artist and story contributor Oliver Sykes:

“When Sophie invited me to become the next Lead Artist for Stories Of Care, I came to it with great excitement and a huge sense of responsibility. Together, the Stories Of Care team has supported an exceptional group of new and exciting young writers as they write their first short stories for children. Creating this special collection of stories has been a truly unforgettable experience and I am incredibly proud of everybody involved.”
